Scrying Mirror Necklace

This Victorian Gothic necklace was inspired by Dr. Dee's Scrying Mirror.

  • A disc of black agate hints of the hidden depths of Dr. Dee's Magic Mirror
  • It hangs from a Victorian filigree connector
  • flanked by hand wrapped chains of faceted jet glass
  • The necklace shown measures 18" or 46cm, but can be made in 16"/41cm long or 20"/51cm
  • It closes with a rustic, antiqued pewter clasp

Whenever I visit the British Museum I'm drawn to the Magical Speculum of Doctor Dee, Queen Elizabeth's court magician.  The obsidian disc is inclosed in a wooden case, labeled with the handwriting of Horace Walpole: "The Black Stone into which Dr Dee used to call his Spirits/ his bookThis Stone was mentioned in the Catalogue of the Collection of the Earls of Peterborough from whom it came to Lady Elizabeth Germaine.  H.W."

A Samuel Butler poem is inscribed in a different hand, mentioning Kelly, Dee's associate:

"Kelly did all his feats upon

The Devil's Looking Glass, a stone;

Where playing with him at Bo-peep, He solv'd all problems ne'er so deep."
